Hello Friends of LCPL!

Welcome to the March newsletter—second edition! We apologize for the delay in getting this edition out. Lidia, our fabulous Spanish Services Coordinator who handles our translations, was away and we wanted to be sure everything was properly translated before sending it. Her work is indispensable to our communications. We have some great things happening at the library that we’re excited to share with you.

Announcements, Updates, & Reminders

Closing Reminder:  we will be closed Tuesday, March 31st for César Chávez Day, a county government holiday. There will be no programming that day.

 

Program Reminders: 

• our NEW Community Writing Group starts on Saturday the 21st from 1-2:30pm. Whether you’re journaling, drafting, or free-writing, you’re welcome to come. This will be held the third Saturday of every month.

 

• our NEW iPad Sketch lab gets underway this month. It’s a great way for teens interested in art, design, and animation to learn new skills using Procreate on our iPads. The next session is Thursday the 26th at 4pm. 

 

• Teens can build their very own DIY Mini Zen Garden on Friday, March 27th from 10:30-noon. Come use sand, rocks, and mini tools and take home a pocket sized stress reliever. 

 

Event Reminder: We’re getting closer to our Earth Day Author Talk with Colorado author Camille Dungy! Save the date NOW for another amazing evening at Freight on Thursday, April 30th, 2026. Doors open at 5:30 with a free community dinner followed by a talk, Q&A, and book signing. Grab your free copy of Soil: The Story of A Black Mother’s Garden at the library while supplies last!

 

Announcement: LCPL Resident Library Card holders all have access to Kanopy, an online streaming entertainment platform. Kanopy is rolling out a new security update which will change how you log in to their services! Starting in Mid March, you’ll need to log in using both your library card number AND password/PIN. To get ahead of the update, log in today and update your information using the following steps:

 

1. Go to www.kanopy.com and log into your Kanopy account.
2. Select the menu button in the top-right corner and go to My Account > My Libraries.
3. Select “Re-enter your log in information” under the library name.
4. Enter your library card number and password/PIN. 
5. Select Save.

 

If you do not remember your password, navigate to www.LakeCountyPublicLibrary.org and click the green box that says “Sign in to your Library Account” in the upper right corner. You’ll then see a link that says “Forgot password? Reset My Password”. Click that and follow the instructions to reset your password. 

If you cannot find your library card number, stop by the library or give us a call at (719) 486-0569 and we’ll be happy to confirm your number with you.

Our Community

LCPL would like to send a warm thank you out to community member Dale Critchley. You might know him from Blueflower Candies & Provisions but we know him as our awesome volunteer leader of the Youth Dungeons & Dragons Club. 

 

I asked Dale what D&D meant to him and he told me “As an introvert with ADHD, I find new social situations and small talk a bit challenging. But D&D is a wonderful way for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect. It provides a shared story framework where everyone can express themselves in their own way... Unlike many games and sports, it’s a cooperative game where age, abilities, and skill don’t matter. Anyone can join in and imagine a different world together, laugh together, and build lasting friendships that go beyond the table.” 

 

Dale went further to talk about his favorite thing about D&D at the library is how it’s so welcoming. “I love the inclusiveness of the community. Everyone is welcome. Popular, homeschooled, shy, athletic, brainy, neurotypical, neurodivergent, disabled, experienced, don't know anything about the game, can't read — we've had the whole range, and everyone has fun! In our group, everyone is welcome. Everyone is respected. Everyone is valued. 12-year-olds and 22-year-olds treat each other as equals, and we all help each other…Those safe spaces with absolute inclusion are incredibly rare, but that's what we get to experience every week. If you're lonely, come throw some shiny dice with us!”

 

Dale knows a thing or two about inclusion. He and his wife own a publishing company dedicated to  publishing materials for TTRPGs (that’s Table Top Role Playing Games). Their goal is to  improve lives, and project lead for Free5e (a completely free, fully compatible, open-license version of D&D designed to be the most accessible and inclusive version of the game ever made). He tells us that it is a work in progress but they’re diligently working on translations to  Spanish, German, and Indonesian and even have an early draft available in digital braille! Dale is also the primary author of Limitless Heroics - Including Characters with Disabilities, Mental Illness, and Neurodivergence in Fifth Edition, a D&D supplement available for checkout at the Lake County Library.

 

When asked what our newsletter readers should know about D&D if they’ve never played it before, Dale says “The best way to learn about the game is to play it. Unlike most games, where you have a limited number of options on your turn, Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) say, "This is the situation. What do you do?" Depending whether you're playing a wizard, knight, pirate, or something else, your character has various abilities to choose from, but unlike a board game or video game, you can do anything that a person (or elf or gnome…) in that situation might do.”  Dale also references his experience of substitute teaching and how he notices many students are so used to instant gratification with screen time, that they can often struggle with their own creativity and problem solving skills. TTRPGs offer a fun and supportive environment for kids (and adults) to exercise their minds in new ways. 

 

Our Collections

Attention all Tool Library aficionados: new tools have dropped into the collection!! As you know, we’re always trying to expand our ever popular Tool Library and we were recently able to. Taking into account your suggestions and the needs of Lake County, we’ve added:

• A track saw kit
• A second Oscillating Multi Tool
• A drywall sanding kit
• A 17 piece hole saw kit
• A compound miter saw
• A pressure washer
• Two soldering iron kits
• A circular saw
• A laser distance meter

As a reminder, ALL Lake County Public Library resident card holders with accounts in good standing are eligible for the Tool Library after completing a 15 minute tool library orientation appointment. Dados, Herramientas y Creatividad en LCPL: Boletín de Marzo, Segunda Edición 

 

¡Hola amigos de LCPL!

 

¡Bienvenidos al boletín de marzo segunda edición! Pedimos disculpas por el retraso en enviar esta edición. Lidia, nuestra fabulosa Coordinadora de Servicios en Español que se encarga de nuestras traducciones, estuvo ausente, y queríamos asegurarnos de que todo estuviera correctamente traducido antes de enviarlo. Su trabajo es indispensable para nuestras comunicaciones. Tenemos muchas cosas excelentes sucediendo en la biblioteca que estamos emocionados de compartir con ustedes. 

 

Anuncios, Actualizaciones y Recordatorios

Recordatorio de cierre: Estaremos cerrados el martes 31 de marzo por el Día de César Chávez, un día festivo del  gobierno del condado. No habrá programación este día. 

 

Recordatorios de programas: 

• Nuestro NUEVO Grupo de  Escritura comienza el sábado 21 de marzo de 1-2:30 pm. Ya sea que escribas en un diario, estés trabajando en un borrador o simplemente quieras escribir libremente, eres bienvenido/a a participar. Este grupo se reunió el tercer sábado de cada mes. 

 

• Nuestro NUEVO Laboratorio de Dibujo en iPad comienza este mes. Es una excelente oportunidad para que los jóvenes interesados en el arte, el diseño y la animación aprendan nuevas habilidades usando Procreate en nuestros iPads. La próxima sesión será el jueves 26 de marzo a las 4pm. 

 

• Los jóvenes pueden crear su propio Mini Jardin Zen DIY el viernes 27 de marzo de 10:30- 12pm. Ven a usar arena, piedras y mini herramientas para crear y llevarte a casa un relajante antiestrés de bolsillo. 

 

Recordatorio de Evento: ¡Cada vez estamos más cerca de nuestra Charla de Autor por el Día de la Tierra con la autora de Colorado Camille Dungy! Aparta la fecha ahora para otra increíble noche en Freight el jueves 30 de abril de 2026. Las puertas abren a las 5:30 pm con una cena comunitaria gratuita, seguida por la charla, sesión de preguntas, y firma de libros. ¡Recoge tu copia gratuita de Soil: The Story of Black Mother 's Garden en la biblioteca mientras haya existencias!

 

Anuncio: Los titulares de tarjeta de biblioteca de residentes de LCPL tienen acceso a Kanopy, una plataforma en línea de entretenimiento por streaming. Kanopy está implementando una nueva actualización de seguridad que cambiará la forma en que inicias sesión en sus servicios. A partir de marzo, necesitarás iniciar sesión usando tu número de tarjeta de la biblioteca y tu contraseña/PIN. Para adelantarte a esta actualización, inicia sesión hoy y actualiza tu información siguiendo estos pasos: 

 

1. Ve a www.kanopy.com e inicia sesión en tu cuenta de Kanopy.
2. Selecciona el botón de menú en la esquina superior derecha y ve a My Account > My Libraries.   
3. Selecciona “Re-enter your login information” debajo del nombre de la biblioteca. 
4. Ingresa tu número de tarjeta de biblioteca y tu contraseña/PIN. 
5. Selecciona Save. 

Si no recuerdas tu contraseña, visita www. LakeCountyPublicLibrary.org y haz clic en el recuadro verde que dice “Sign in to your Library Account” en la esquina superior derecha. Luego verás un enlace que dice “Forgot password? Reset my password”. Haz clic ahí y sigue las instrucciones para restablecer tu contraseña.

Nuestra Comunidad

LCPL le gustaría enviar un cálido agradecimiento al miembro de la comunidad Dale Critchley. Quizás lo conozcan por Blueflower Candies & Provisions, pero nosotros lo conocemos como el increíble voluntario que lidera el Club Juvenil de Dungeons & Dragons. 

 

Le pregunté a Dale que significa D&D para él y me dijo: “Como introvertido con TDAH, a veces me resultan un poco difíciles las nuevas situaciones sociales y las conservaciones informales. Pero D&D es una forma maravillosa para que personas de todas las edades y orígenes se conecten. Ofrece un  marco de historia compartida donde todos pueden expresarse a su manera… A diferencia de muchos juegos y deportes, es un juego cooperativo donde la edad, las habilidades y la experiencia no importan. Cualquiera puede unirse e imaginar un mundo diferente juntos, reír juntos y construir amistades duraderas que van más allá de la mesa.” 

 

Dale también habló sobre lo que más le gusta de D&D en la biblioteca y lo acogedor que es. “Me encanta lo inclusiva que es la comunidad. Todos son bienvenidos. Populares, estudiantes educados en casa, tímidos, atléticos, intelectuales, neurotípicos, neuro divergentes, personas con discapacidades, jugadores con experiencia, quienes no saben nada del juego, o incluso quienes no saben leer hemos tenido de todo, ¡y todos se divierten! En nuestro grupo, todos son bienvenidos. Todos son respetados, Todos son valorados. Jóvenes de 12 años y de 22 años se tratan como iguales y todos nos ayudamos… Esos espacios seguros con inclusión absoluta son increíblemente raros, pero eso es lo que podemos experimentar cada semana. Si te sientes solo, ¡ven a lanzar algunos dados brillantes con nosotros!”

 

Dale sabe mucho sobre la inclusión. Él y su esposa son dueños de una editorial dedicada a publicar materiales para TTRPGs (juegos de rol de mesa). Su objetivo es mejorar la vida de las personas, y Dale es el líder del proyecto Free5e (una versión completamente gratuita, totalmente compatible y de licencia abierta de D&D diseñada para ser la versión más accesible e inclusiva del juego jamás creada). Nos cuenta que aún es un trabajo en progreso, pero que está trabajando diligentemente en traducciones al español, alemán e indonesio, e incluso ya cuentan con un borrador temprano disponible en braille digital. Dale también es el autor principal de Limitless Heroics- Including Characters with Disabilities, Mental Illness, and Neurodivergence in Fifth Edition, un suplemento de D&D que está disponible para préstamo en la Biblioteca. 

 

Cuando le preguntamos qué deberían saber nuestros lectores del boletín sobre D&D si nunca lo han jugado, Dale respondió: “La mejor manera de aprender sobre el juego es jugando. A diferencia de la mayoría de los juegos, donde tienes un número limitado de opciones en tu turno, D&D y otros juegos de rol de mesa  (TTRPGs) dicen: ‘Esta es la situación. ¿Qué haces?’ Dependiendo de si estás jugando como un mago, caballero, pirata o algo más, tu personaje tiene diferentes habilidades para elegir, pero a diferencia de un juego de mesa o un videojuego, puedes hacer cualquier cosa que una persona (o un elfo o un gnomo…) en esa situación podría hacer.”    

 

Dale también menciona su experiencia como maestro sustituto y cómo ha notado que muchos estudiantes están tan acostumbrados a la gratificación instantánea del tiempo frente a las pantallas que a veces tienen dificultades para desarrollar su propia creatividad y habilidades para resolver problemas. Los TTRPGs ofrecen un ambiente divertido y de apoyo donde los niños (y los adultos) pueden ejercitar su mente de nuevas maneras.

 Atención a todos los aficionados de la Biblioteca de Herramientas: ¡han llegado nuevas herramientas a la colección! Como saben, siempre estamos buscando ampliar nuestra popular Biblioteca de Herramientas, y recientemente pudimos hacerlo. Tomando en cuenta sus sugerencias y las necesidades del Condado de Lake, hemos añadido:

• Un Kit de sierra de riel (track saw)
• Una segunda herramienta multiuso oscilante
• Un kit para lijar paneles de yeso (drywall)
• Un kit de sierras de corona de 17 piezas
• Una sierra ingletadora compuesta
• Una hidrolavadora
• Dos kits de cautin para soldar
• Una sierra circular
• Un medidor de distancia laser

 

Como recordatorio, todos los titulares de tarjeta de residente de la Biblioteca Pública del Condado de Lake, con cuentas en buen estado, son elegibles para usar la Biblioteca de Herramientas después de completar una orientación de 15 minutos.
