Fall is in full swing, and there’s so much happening at the library this month. Cozy up with a good book, join us for an event, or discover something new inside!

 

Announcements/Updates

Reminder: Read & Discover Storytime is cancelled on Thursday October 16th! It will resume normal operations thereafter.

 

We have just a few items left from our Halloween Costume Exchange last weekend! Stop by anytime to check out what’s left. Items will be available through Friday the 17th.

Wow, wow, WOW!
 

Thank you to everyone who came out for our 4th Annual Banned Books Week Celebration last week! Nearly 150 people joined us to hear Jason Reynolds speak and we were treated to a world premiere advanced reading from his newest book and the conclusion to the Track Series, Coach, which had not even hit shelves yet! Jason’s Q&A session was filled with thoughtfulness and heart. On the challenging topic of the freedom to read, he shared his empathetic perspective: “If you steal intellectual freedom, then it’s probably because you didn’t have it yourself.”

In addition to Jason’s powerful insights into his writing, his work, and book bans, we were honored to welcome Jamie LaRue, who introduced Jason and shared a few inspiring words of his own. Jamie currently serves as Executive Director of the Garfield County Public Library District and is the former Executive Director of the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom and the Freedom to Read Foundation. He’s been recognized as Colorado Librarian of the Year, received the Colorado Association of Libraries Career Achievement Award, and even had a library named after him in Douglas County in 2013! His remarks reminded us that “the library is a human experience” and one that deserves to be celebrated in every community.

That spirit of celebration continued with a moving performance by two Leadville youths, Zoey Sweet and Solea Teesdale, mentored by Theresa Keely. They shared excerpts from two of Jason’s books, highlighting just how important it is for young readers to find stories that resonate with them and spark curiosity about the world.

We are deeply grateful for the delicious food, the hard work of the Freight staff, the talent of our youth performers, and the time and generosity of both Jason and Jamie. Most of all, we’re thankful for our community for showing up, celebrating, and standing up for the freedom to read.

Our Collections

Have you ever noticed all the little stickers on the spines of our books? Those aren’t there for library staff! They are there for you! We know that not everyone has a specific book in mind when they’re browsing the shelves so we’ve put category stickers on many of the books to help you notice the kinds of books you like to read. Fantasy, historical fiction, banned books, romance and more have their own unique sticker you can look for as you walk through the library. Our online catalog and our front desk staff are always happy to help you as well, but if you enjoy the “hunt” for the perfect book, category stickers are a great tool to help.

¡Hola amigos de la biblioteca!

 

El otoño está en pleno apogeo y hay mucho sucediendo en la biblioteca este mes. Acomodate con un buen libro, acompañanos en algún evento o descubre algo nuevo dentro de la biblioteca.

¡Todavía nos quedan algunos disfraces del intercambio de disfraces de halloween del fin de semana pasado! Pasa en cualquier momento para ver que queda. Los artículos estarán disponibles hasta el viernes 17.

¡Wow, wow, WOW!

 

¡Gracias a todos los asistieron a nuestra 4ª Celebración Anual de la Semana de los Libros Prohibidos la semana pasada! Casi 150 personas se unieron para escuchar a Jason Reynolds, quien nos regaló una lectura avanzada exclusiva de su nuevo libro Coach, la conclusión de la serie Track ¡que aún no llega a las bibliotecas! Durante la sesión de preguntas y respuestas, Jason compartió reflexiones llenas de empatía y corazón sobre el tema de la libertad de leer: “Si robas la libertad intelectual, probablemente es porque tu mismo nunca la tuviste”

Además de sus poderosos comentarios sobre su escritura, su obra y la censura de libros, tuvimos el honor de contar con Jaime LaRue, quien presentó a Jason y compartió unas palabras inspiradoras. Jaime es actualmente Director Ejecutivo del Distrito de Bibliotecas

Públicas del condado de Garfield, y fue director ejecutivo de la oficina de libertad intelectual y la fundación de libertad para leer de la Asociación Americana de Bibliotecas (ALA). Ha sido reconocido como Bibliotecario del año en Colorado, ¡e incluso tiene una biblioteca con su nombre en el Condado de Douglas desde 2013!  Nos recordó que: “La biblioteca es una experiencia humana” —una que merece ser celebrada en todas las comunidades. 

Ese espíritu de celebración continuó con una conmovedora presentación de dos jóvenes de Leadville, Zoey Sweet y Solea Tesdale, bajo la mentoría de Theresa Keely. Ellas compartieron fragmentos de los libros de Jason, destacando lo importante que es para los jóvenes lectores encontrar historias que resuenen con ellos y despierten su curiosidad por el mundo. 

Estamos profundamente agradecidos por la deliciosa comida, el arduo trabajo del personal de Freight, el talento de nuestra intérprete y la generosidad de Jason y Jamie. Pero, sobre todo, agradecemos a la comunidad por participar, celebrar y defender la libertad de leer. ¡Que noche tan maravillosa!
