 Lake County Public Library is the highest public library in North America at over 10,000 feet in altitude.  It is located in the historic mining city of Leadville, Colorado (map).  The library houses a rare and interesting Colorado Mountain History Collection of local history and genealogy, documenting the unique history of this "Boom Town," at its peak called the wealthiest mining camp in the world.

Lake County Public Library will stay in touch with the people we serve in order to meet their personal, recreational, educational and professional needs.  We will provide free and equal access to programs, services, print materials and electronic resources that encourage self education.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT OUR LIBRARY IN 2010:

Cardholders number:   3,921
Total circulation in 2010:   32,573 (includes books, magazines, videos, books-on-tape plus 878 special request loans from other libraries)  It would cost people $792,128.00 to purchase.
Interlibrary loans:  The library loans and borrows more than 1,051 items annually for its customers through the statewide interlibrary loan cooperative program.
MagazinesIn 2010, Lake County Public Library subscribed to 76 popular magazines, and checked out 740 issues, saving people more than $3,700.00 in retail costs.
Holdings:   33,585 items - Over 7,500 of these items are audio, video, computer, serials, or electronic serials.
In 2010 -  the library added 3,422 new items in English and Spanish to the permanent collection.
Computers:   4 electronic card catalog stations; 5 public computers with Internet access, 2 laptops (wireless), 2 computers in genealogy department and wireless connectivity for patrons personal computers.  All public computers have access to Microsoft Office, children's games, online encyclopedia, Ebsco,  Chiltons and Learning Express Library.   During 2010, the public spent 6,909 hours at the public computer workstations which would have cost patrons $82,908.00 to rent by the hour.
Staff:   3 full-time, 6 part-time
2010 Children's Story Hour & Summer Reading Program:   The Lake County Public Library hosted programs for children with an attendance of  7,884.  There were programs for 192 visits from Pitts Elementary, West Park Elementary and the Center.  They hosted 303 programs for aults and children with a total attendance of 7,896.  The Library's children's staff averaged more than 192 information skills instruction contacts to local children during library program weeks.
2010 - 4,101 Lake County residents borrowed materials from the library over the past 4 years.  More than half the population has an active library card.
2010 - Visits to the public library numbered more than 60,020.  that's an average of more than 8 visits per resident.
Genealogy & Colorado Mountain History Collection Usage:  In 2010 307 visitors and local researchers used these collections plus 217 letters were researched and answered by mail/email.
Public Community Rooms (AMAX,  Baby Doe & Leadville Room):  In 2010, Lake County Public Library's community rooms were used for 261 public meetings.
In 2010, The Lake County Public Library staff answered more than 4,093 reference questions.
In 2010, Lake County Public Library provided $3.84 service value return per local taxpayer dollar invested.
